Enterprise software company Freshworks has acquired AI startup Robusta, according to a report published by Entrackr on November 2, 2026\. The transaction was among five acquisitions involving Indian startups reported during October, as companies across software, healthcare and cybersecurity continued to consolidate their businesses.

The deal reflects a broader shift in the technology sector, where established companies are looking to add AI capabilities through acquisitions rather than relying entirely on in-house development.

**Why established companies are buying AI startups**
Developing new technology internally can take time, particularly when a company needs specialised engineering talent and expertise. Acquiring a smaller business can offer a quicker way to bring new capabilities into an existing product portfolio.

For enterprise software companies, AI tools can help automate routine tasks, improve customer support and make business software more efficient. However, the value of an acquisition depends on how successfully the technology is integrated into existing products.

The financial terms of the Freshworks-Robusta transaction were not specified in the cited funding roundup.

**Startup acquisitions are changing**
Acquisitions can also provide founders and early investors with an exit route. Instead of continuing to operate independently, a startup may become part of a larger company with more customers, resources and distribution channels.

For the buyer, the challenge is to retain the acquired team's expertise and make the technology useful to existing customers. Poor integration can limit the benefits of a deal, even when the underlying technology is promising.
A more selective technology market
India's technology deal activity in the July-September quarter of 2026 was driven largely by mergers and acquisitions, even as private equity and venture capital investment declined sharply, according to Grant Thornton Bharat's quarterly report.

This suggests that strategic buyers continue to see value in selected technology businesses, even when investors are more cautious about providing fresh growth capital.

For AI startups, being acquired could become an increasingly important route to scaling their products. For founders who want to remain independent, the challenge will be to demonstrate that their technology can attract customers and generate sustainable revenue on its own.
